Step-by-Step: Party Girl Hair

This is a staple in Ensemble Ballet Theatre's, "The Nutcracker" but will also be used this weekend by many of our roles in "Once Upon A Time".

  1. Curl the entire head of hair with a 1/2"-1" curling rod or wand. Be sure to use heat protectant and hair spray throughout this process. Alternatively you can do the twists first and curl just the remaining portion of the hair.

  2. Once curled, start with two small sections of hair near the front of the head, one from each side. These are your “outside” and “inside” sections.

  3. Cross the outside section (closest to the ear) over the top of the inside section. You’re essentially wrapping one over the other, like the beginning of a rope braid.

  4. Now begin to pick up small pieces of hair along the hairline, adding them to the outside section as you go. Just like in a French braid, you’re adding hair into the style as you work your way along the head—but again, just with two sections instead of three!

  5. Continue this pattern, always adding to the outside section and crossing it over the inside section. Follow the natural curve of the hairline as you move toward the back of the head, staying above the ear.

  6. Once you’ve reached the back of the head, secure the twist with a small clear elastic to keep it neat and tidy.

  7. Do the same on the other side, and secure the twists together.

  8. Costumes team will provide you with a ribbon or headpiece. :)
