Today was a big day in our rehearsal process, our understudy run-through! Dancers that were assigned an understudy role had the chance to step into their part and experience a full run through as if they were performing on stage.
It’s not just a practice; it’s a chance to feel the excitement, the nerves and the responsibility that comes with the role, even if it’s just for the rehearsal. Today, our dancers rose to the occasion!
At Ensemble Ballet Theatre, we believe that being cast as an understudy is a privilege and an opportunity. It’s a way to gain experience, stretch yourself, and be part of something more than the role(s) you were assigned.
Throughout the season, understudies take ownership of their learning:
Choosing how and when to attend rehearsals for their understudied role
Using videos and rehearsals to study and absorb choreography
Balancing their main cast parts while preparing quietly and diligently behind the scenes
There’s never a guarantee that an understudy will perform for an audience, but that's not what defines the role. The true value is in the work, the preparation, and the growth that comes from stepping up, just in case the moment arrives.
Today’s run-through reminded us that every role matters. Every rehearsal matters. And every dancer, whether they’re dancing front and center or waiting in the wings, plays a part in making our production a success.
We are so proud of our dancers and the incredible work you brought to life today.
